Context
Census provides tools for data teams to sync data from their data warehouse to business apps like Salesforce, HubSpot, or Facebook Audiences. Census accomplishes this by giving users the ability to add queries to the platform (raw SQL, dbt, or Python) and surfacing the columns that those queries return. Then users can sync data from those columns to end destination fields.
Problem
Collaborating on data in Census is fraught with risk around miscommunication and access. Marketing teams want to self-serve the data they need for campaigns to experiment quickly and connect with customers. Data teams however are often overloaded with requests and want to ensure marketers can access the right data.
Solution
I collaborated with engineers and our Chief Product Officer to design a canvas-based experience for data teams to define data objects, know as Entities. A canvas experience creates powerful visuals that represent the abstract relationships between data in a data warehouse.
